Chudleigh Pomeroy is a male human who was introduced in Mortal Engines. He was a member of the Guild of Historians and the mentor and father figure to Tom before the latter was pushed out of London while chasing Valentine's assassin. After MEDUSA destroyed London, he became the leader of the survivors who lived in the ruins.
He died in his sleep before New London could be completed, and his role was passed to Chesney Garamond.[1]
In the 2018 film, he was portrayed by English actor Colin Salmon.
Description[]
Chudleigh is old,[6] with a round, red face; a toupee on his head; bushy eyebrows; and the mark of the Historians tattooed on his forehead - a blue eye - and wears the black uniform of the Historians.[7] He wears a watch on one of his wrists.[5] He smells like mothballs and pipe tobacco.[6]
Chudleigh is from African descent and wears the black-and-blue uniform of the Historians and wire-framed glasses. Like the rest of the Historians, he lacks the blue eye tattoo on his forehead.[2]
History[]
Mortal Engines quartet[]
Mortal Engines[]
Chudleigh was the Deputy head Historian of London, and helped Katherine Valentine and Bevis Pod rebel against the Engineers. He, along with every Londoner, is presumed dead after the destruction of London's Gut and the damage caused by MEDUSA result in the city's destruction.
Predator's Gold[]
Pomeroy was mentioned when Tom thought of how he learned about Alternate Historians when he meets Pennyroyal.
A Darkling Plain[]
When Tom Natsworthy and his daughter Wren travel into London's wreck, Tom discovers that Pomeroy is alive and is now the Lord Mayor of London, having survived MEDUSA by jumping into a fiberglass whale in the London Museum right before it went off. Although Pomeroy is leading the efforts to change London into an airbound, non-predator city, he unfortunately dies before New London is completed.
Film[]
Chudleigh is found by Katherine in the London Mueseum, who is looking for Tom. Chudleigh yells to himself: "Where the hell is Tom?" Tom comes running into the London Muesuem, flustered and embarresed from viewing the Salzhaken chase, and threatens him. Chudleigh leaves Tom to talk to Katherine about the Sixty Minute War. Later, he is seen when he helps Bevis and Katherine discover MEDUSA in St. Paul by walking through the Cat's Cradle. When MEDUSA is fired, Chudleigh is astonished about it. At the end of the film, he is a refugee of Shan Guo.
Trivia[]
- His name comes from the names of two towns local to Philip Reeve, namely Chudleigh and Berry Pomeroy.[8][9]
- A scene cut from the film depicted Pomeroy greeting a class of children visiting the museum, delivering the backstory of The Sixty-Minute War and Tractionism as opposed to Shrike's unseen narration in the opening. Although the scene did not make the final cut of the film, it can still be seen in trailers and bonus features.
- In the original version of Mortal Engines, Pomeroy was the Lord Mayor's main rival. Everyone in the government, including him, was debating each other on constructing an artificial bridge connecting Britain to the mainland, allowing them to dine on Europe's traction cities.[10]
