Cloud 9 or Cloud Nine was was a lighter-than-air structure that was introduced in Infernal Devices. It was the traditional residence of Brighton's mayor before being destroyed by the Green Storm in the Battle of Brighton.
Description[]
Cloud 9 was a large, circular, lightweight, suspended deckplate with an onion-shaped palace built on it. It was kept in the sky by several large, transparent balloons. Small fans bolted to the deckplates edges adjusted its attitude for various occasions.
The platform was connected to Brighton by multiple thick hawsers, with explosive bolts that could sever these cables attached. The structure was noted to be "littered" with artistic sculptures and various other buildings, including hangers for the Flying Ferrets and the Mayor's personal airship.[1]
History[]
Mortal Engines quartet[]
Infernal Devices[]
Nabisco Shkin sold Wren Natsworthy to Nimrod Pennyroyal, in the hopes that her origins in Anchorage would destroy him. Instead, Wren lied about her origins to keep herself as a slave while planning her escape from Brighton.
Moon Festival amongst the elite was celebrated on Cloud 9, soon before the Green Storm besieged the city. The deckplate was then rendered loose and floated into the sky.
In the aftermath, the wreck of Cloud 9 crashed into a North African desert, where it was devoured by dozens of Scavenger Towns. Hester Shaw, with her husband having learned of her betrayal of Anchorage to the Huntsmen of Arkangel in Predator's Gold, remained aboard the wreckage as it crashed, only to be brought aboard one of the Scavengers by Shrike.
