Clytie Potts is a female human who was introduced in Mortal Engines. She was a Historian at the beginning of the series before becoming an Aviator after the fall of London when MEDUSA exploded on it. Her ship is the Archaeopteryx, which is used by the New Londoners to gather supplies from surrounding cities.

In the 2018 film, she was portrayed by English actress Sophie Cox.

Description[]

Clytie wore black clothes, like all Historians, and has a blue eye tattooed between her eyebrows.[3]

Twenty years after her initial appearance, her dark hair has gotten grey and the blue eye tattoo has been removed.[1]

Clytie has pale skin and short brown hair. She wears the black-and-blue clothing of the Historians.[4]

Mortal Engines[]

Clytie was part of the Historian's Guild, and a recent graduate. At the novel, she was thought to be dead when MEDUSA destroyed the city.

Predator's Gold[]

Under the alias "Cruwys Morchard", Pennyroyal mentions that she told people about the wreckage of London in the aftermath of MEDUSA.

A Darkling Plain[]

It is mentioned that she survived the backfire of MEDUSA when Chudleigh Pomeroy pulled her into the giant model of a blue whale in the museum during the explosion.

After surviving London, she adopts the name "Cruwys Morchard" to avoid being associated with the city.

Clytie is the person who originally leads Tom back to London after he recognizes her while travelling on the Bird Roads with his daughter Wren. When he meets her, she pretends not to know him.

She was later revealed to be a member of Pomeroy's council.

Film[]

Clytie first appears accompanying Herbert when he taunts Tom before sending him to the Gut.

At the end of the film, she becomes a refugee of Shan Guo alongside the other London survivors with Katherine leading them.

Clytie was shown to be distasteful of Melliphant as London chased Salthook.

Lurpak Flint[]

Lurpak Flint is Clytie's husband.

Tom Natsworthy[]

Although they talked a little, Clytie seemed to like Tom.

Trivia[]

  • "Clytie" is a variant of the name "Klytië", which was derived from the Greek word "klytos" ("famous, noble"). In Greek mythology, Klytië was an ocean nymph who was infatuated with Helios, the sun god. Helios did not return her love, and Klytië died staring and pining at him until she turned into the heliotrope flower.[5] "Cruwys Morchard" is a parish in the Mid Devon district of the county of Devon in England.[6]
