David Shaw was a male human who was mentioned in Mortal Engines. He was the husband of Pandora Shaw and the presumed biological father of Hester Shaw until the main events of the series.

David resided on Oak Island with his wife and her daughter Hester, whom he raised as his own.
When Hester was about seven years old, Thaddeus Valentine invaded the Shaw's home to obtain MEDUSA. Both David and Pandora were killed, and Hester was scarred mentally and physically for life.

David was indirectly mentioned when Hester mentions that the aviator's shrine on the Jenny Haniver lacks photos of the pilots' dead parents.
When Sathya holds Hester prisoner in Rogue's Roost, she mentions that Shaw's biological father is Thaddeus Valentine, according to Anna Fang's reports. Hester denies it, saying that David is her father, but slowly, she accepts that Valentine is her biological father and takes after him in personality and appearance.

- "David" is an English name derived from the Hebrew name "Dawid", which meant "beloved" or "uncle".[2] "Shaw" is an English surname originally given to someone who lived near a thicket, and is a Scottish surname meaning "wolf".[3]
- David shares the same as Tom Natsworthy's father.
- It is unknown why David was cut out of the film.
