Mortal Engines Wiki

Gargle was a male human who was introduced in Predator's Gold. He is a member of the Lost Boys.

He was killed by Hester Natsworthy in an attempt to save her daughter.[1]

Description[]

As a child, Gargle was small,[3] with pale ears.[4]

As an adult, he is handsome, with long dark hair. He wears high boots; a long coat; and a gun in his belt.[5]

Personality[]

Initially, Gargle was portrayed as inept and a dunce; yet he is bright and good with technology.[3] He is later shown to be clever and deceptive.[1]

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Gargle, like all Lost Boys, was kidnapped as a very young child and raised in Grimsby under the watchful eye of Uncle. An inept thief, he was often bullied by other boys, with Caul being a notable exception.

Predator's Gold[]

Despite his lackluster burglary skills, Gargle's intelligence was recognized by Uncle and he was assigned to spy on Anchorage alongside Caul and Skewer. In return for Caul's kindness, Gargle later freed him from hanging and supplied him with a map to the Dead Continent.

Infernal Devices[]

Gargle became Uncle's assistant, eventually taking control of Grimsby and the Lost Boys in all but name.

In 1025 TE, he travelled to Anchorage with Remora and Fishcake with the intention of taking the Tin Book. He manipulated Wren Natsworthy into stealing it for him, but was fatally shot and killed by her mother before he could depart.

A Darkling Plain[]

Gargle is indirectly mentioned when Tom thinks of how his daughter stole the Tin Book for him, Remora, and Fishcake after ODIN fires on multiple traction cities.
