Jasper Pewsey[1] was a male human who was introduced in Mortal Engines. He and Gench were the pilots of Thaddeus Valentine's airship, the 13th Floor Elevator, until it was shot down by Tom Natsworthy.[2]

In the 2018 film, he was portrayed by Stephen Ure.

Description[]

Pewsey was old.[5]

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Pewsey and Gench formerly worked as air-pirates, attacking and stealing things from other airships. It is not said how he and Gench were reformed, and came to work aboard London, however it is likely that he and Gench tried to attack a London airship, but instead their airship was shot down and they were captured and taken to London.

Pewsey and Gench assisted Valentine in taking MEDUSA from Pandora Shaw, by flying the Elevator to Oak Island. When Hester was found alive Pewsey and Gench chased after her, until she escaped in a rowboat.

Mortal Engines[]

Pewsey and Gench were first seen when Tom Natsworthy was sent down to London's Gut after fighting with Herbert Melliphant.

When Tom flew the Jenny Haniver near London, Valentine sent Pewsey and Gench in the Elevator to destroy the Jenny. They fired rockets at the Jenny Haniver, damaging much of the gondola. Tom, however, fires rockets at the Elevator's windows, killing Pewsey and Gench and sending the Elevator crashing onto London. Tom felt remorse over killing Pewsey and Gench, even after London was destroyed.

Predator's Gold[]

Pewsey's death in Mortal Engines was mentioned to be the reason why Tom did not want to arm the Jenny.

Field Guides[]

The Illustrated World of Mortal Engines[]

Pewsey was mentioned in the book.

Film[]

Pewsey is first seen flying the 13th Floor Elevator to Sharkmoor Prison. He was present when Valentine destroyed the maritime prison to free Shrike.

When Hester used Pandora's crash drive to shut down MEDUSA, Valentine ordered him and Gench to murder the Navigators, forcing London to crash into the Shield Wall. It is unknown what happened to him afterwards.

Trivia[]

  • Pewsey's surname comes from a tombstone that Philip Reeve saw while wandering a Brighton cemetary.[6]
