Katie Solent (née Unthank) was a female human who was mentioned in Fever Crumb. She was the wife of Kit Solent before she died of the blue flu soon after her daughter, Fern, was born.
Description[]
In a painting of her Kit kept, Katie was described as "a woman with long dark hair and an absurd, frilled collar".
History[]
Pre-Series[]
Her dead father, Chigley Unthank, had been an archaeologist who had worked sometimes with Auric Godshawk. After finding Godshawk's notebook, Kit, after asking some questions, found Katie, who told him about the importance of Fever Crumb and her having Godshawk's memories. She also told of an old tunnel which was supposed to link a house Godshawk built with the Barbican. After spending months looking for it, Katie and Kit didn't find it, but fell in love in the meantime, and, preoccupied, forgot about Godshawk's secrets.
After Katie died, her family burnt candles for her on a table beneath the painting so she would "have some light down in the Sunless Country".
Fever Crumb trilogy[]
Fever Crumb[]
Katie was indirectly mentioned when Stayling gave Fever Crumb an overview of Kit Solent, as he hired her as an assistant.
Trivia[]
- "Katie" is a short form of the English name "Katherine", which is derived from the Greek name "Aikaterine". The etymology could be derived from the early Greek name "Hekaterine", which meant "each of the two"; the Greek goddess Hecate; or the Greek name "aikia", which meant "torture". In the early Christian era, it became associated with the Greek word "katharos", which meant "pure".[1] "Solent" refers to the Solent, a strait between the Isle of Wight and Great Britain.[2]
- Katie's favorite scent was a perfume, "Nocturne in Blue, by Eldritch Hooter." Which Kit described as a "sentimental old smell from Scriven times".
