Sathya Kuranath was a female human who was introduced in Mortal Engines. She is a friend and apprentice of Anna Fang.

In the 2018 film, she was portrayed by Indian actress Menik Gooneratne.

Appearance[]

Sathya is noted to be of Indian descent.

In Predator's Gold, Sathya's arm is sliced off by the Stalker Fang when pursuing Tom and Hester in an attempt to kill them.

Sixteen years later, her missing arm is replaced by a metal hook.[1]

Personality[]

A die-hard Anti-Tractionist, Sathya is at first highly untrusting of Tom and Hester, and is highly protective of Anna. She hates traction cities and often urges Anna to be aggressive rather than stop and think at times.

Despite being a little bit hot-headed, she is a good companion to Anna Fang and eventually gets along with Tom and Hester.

She is also noted to be "rude" by others.

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Sathya's hatred of Tractionism stemmed from her childhood; she grew up in a nomadic village that lived in the track marks of traction cities, and were always poor and starving. Eventually she managed to 'escape' the village by stowing away in the Jenny Haniver, the airship of Anna Fang on her return trip from a mission in Palau Pinang. In the Anti-Traction League she proved her tactical and combat skill, becoming a wing-commander. She also developed a close relationship with Anna.

Mortal Engines[]

Sathya was in Batmunkh Gompa when Anna introduced her to Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw. As the former came from London, Sathya accused him of being a Tractionist spy.

Predator's Gold[]

After Anna's death at the hands of Thaddeus Valentine, Sathya joined the Green Storm, becoming the facility commander at Rogue's Roost. She travelled to Zhan Shan and helped to steal Anna's corpse, in the hopes that Dr. Popjoy could resurrect her as a Stalker. While Popjoy succeeded in turning Anna's body into the Stalker Fang, he failed to reinstate her memories and personality, so Sathya had the Memory Chamber constructed in an effort to restore them.

After Widgery Blinkoe captured Hester Shaw, Sathya brought Hester multiple times to visit the Stalker Fang. Although the Stalker did not respond to Hester's presence, Sathya's anger towards Hester faded and she eventually confided in the assassin. This newfound trust was sharply broken when Tom arrived at Rogue's Roost to rescue his partner. Enraged, Sathya attempted to behead Tom in front of Hester, when Caul detonated the crab-cams that were already inside the facility.

As Tom and Hester tried to escape Rogue's Roost, Sathya attempted to kill the duo, but was stopped when the Stalker Fang severed her arm.

Infernal Devices[]

Sathya was mentioned by the Stalker Fang as she turned into "Anna" in front of Fishcake after Shrike assassinated her at the end of the novel.

A Darkling Plain[]

Outcast to a remote part of the largest mountain in Shan Guo, Sathya became a hermit, although supplies were given to her by the nearby village in the foothills once a month.

Here she raised animals and - initially - trained herself for combat on a daily basis. However, as she got older her anger wore out and she began to appreciate her exile; the other option was execution.

When the Stalker Fang found Sathya while traveling with Fishcake, she regained most of her previous personality. Fishcake particularly liked Sathya and went to live with her after the Stalker Fang was destroyed.
